The Office was created in July 1993 in an effort to better serve the needs and interests of all residents of
the Town by providing more efficient and effective delivery of planning and development services. The OPDS
merges the duties and responsibilities of the former Planning Department, Building Inspection Office, Office
of Community Development, and Economic Development staff. The agency acts as a liaison with State and local
agencies, carries out development activities on behalf of the Town and provides planning and staff assistance
to the Town Manager's Office, land use and other boards and commissions, and other Town departments and
political subdivisions. The OPDS carries out its mission through four divisions: Planning, Inspection
Services; Community Development; and Economic Development. More detailed information about departmental
